Information Systems Major

The Zimpleman College of Business IS program offers an IS major to students in the college and an IS minor for students outside the college. Zimpleman's program reinforces classroom instruction with hands-on student experiences. Our dedicated faculty are committed to providing high-quality instruction with small class sizes to prioritize professor-student interactions and facilitate individual student learning. IS students have the opportunity to learn methodologies, applications, and tools used by Fortune 500 firms. All of our students gain valuable experience in:

  • Systems analysis and design
  • Database management
  • Application development

The Drake Curriculum

The Drake Curriculum

The Drake Curriculum, required of all undergraduates, is designed to help students meet personal and professional goals as they acquire fundamental knowledge and abilities in ten Areas of Inquiry. Zimpleman students work closely with their academic advisers to craft a program of study in general education that prepares students for civic and professional leadership.

The Drake Curriculum also requires:

  • First-year seminars, which foster the development of critical thinking and written and oral communication skills through a topical focus
  • Senior Capstone, in which students demonstrate the capacity to bring information, skills, and ideas to bear on one project

Academic preparation

Academic preparation

Information Systems does not require specific courses to enroll in the program. However, successful students typically have prior experience with technology and have taken multiple high school courses in mathematics.

Information Systems Minor

Information Systems is more than just computer programming; it is about meeting the needs of business customers through the effective use of technology. Zimpleman's Information Systems minor provides students with foundational technology and business knowledge with technical skills related to:

  • Systems analysis and design
  • Database management
  • Application development that the information technology industry requires of its employees combined with a high-level understanding of business foundations. 

This minor is available to all Drake students.
