Story from Aaron Hermsen & Joaquin Valdes
Frank’s Fixies is a bicycle company based in Des Moines, Iowa. It was established in late 2013 by Aaron Hermsen and Joaquin Valdes after they were inspired by their time as foreign students in Shanghai, China. Since its inception, this startup company has experienced many changes, from different business models to adding a third team member, Isaac Sheila-Stevens.
During the summer of 2014, the company received support from a business incubator catered to students and sponsored by the Drake University Entrepreneurship Center. The business received financial support, mentorship, and an introduction to a rich network of professionals from the Des Moines area.
Today, Frank’s Fixies is focused on selling their fixed gear, single-speed bicycles, and their apparel. Their bicycles have unique designs, but for the consumer looking to go even further in personalization, Frank’s Fixies offers custom-made bikes where every component is selected for the consumer's greatest satisfaction.
As of late, Hermsen, Valdes, and Shella-Steven have started screen printing services. Their capability to print their own apparel has enabled them to produce apparel for different campus organizations across Drake University.
The team at Frank’s Fixies has offered new bikes and products and participated in various popular local events, such as music festivals 80|35 and Hinterland, as well as other Des Moines classics like Drake Relays, the Downtown Farmer’s Market, and RAGBRAI.
