The Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute was created in 2000 and supported by Drake alumni passionate about continuing Dr. Adams' legacy of leadership for students far beyond his tenure at Drake. The Adams Leadership Academy was the Institute's first program, and has since grown to include three exclusive leadership training series for students, as well as and a number of campus workshops and events. Since it's inception, the institute was reached over 7,000 students.
For 37 years, Dr. Donald V. Adams dedicated his career to shaping the lives of Drake University students, leaving a lasting impact that continues to inspire generations.
Serving as Vice President for Student Life from 1969 to 2007, and later assuming key leadership roles in enrollment management and as Executive Assistant to the President, Dr. Adams was a visionary leader who believed in the power of education to transform lives. His influence extended beyond Drake, serving as President of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the leading association for student affairs professionals in higher education. He was widely recognized for his contributions to the field, earning some of its highest honors, including the NASPA Scott Goodnight Award for outstanding student affairs leadership across the United States.
Dr. Adams’ true legacy is not just in titles or accolades—it is in the kind of leader he was. Students and colleagues alike gravitated toward him, drawn to his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering belief in others.
