In the summer of 1992, an extraordinary number
of painted lady butterflies showed up
across the Midwest. They could be seen across the prairies, on the interstate
highways,
and in the gardens. Here are two that visited our butterfly garden in Iowa.
Purple asters and monarch butterflies--what
a wonderful combination.
Look for them at every turn in summer and fall in regions where the purple asters
grow.
A sign of midsummer in Iowa is the hibiscus.
Its flaming red in the sunlight
attracts visitors to the butterfly garden.
