Lexie Bennet

Meet Lexie Bennett, a rising third-year student pharmacist in the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program who will graduate in 2025. Lexie is currently completing the AMCP Foundation/Pfizer Inc. Managed Care Pharmacy Summer Internship Program. The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) Foundation, is the research, education, and philanthropic organization supporting AMCP, the leading professional association in managed care. The internship is offered in partnership with Pfizer, Inc., a multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology corporation in pursuit of scientific breakthroughs and revolutionary medicines.

Tell us about your internship. What does a typical day look like for you?

The great thing about this internship is the variety of tasks and projects I am involved with as well as the hands-on exposure to managed care pharmacy. In addition to my capstone research exploring the financial impact of Paxlovid, I have been on numerous projects related to population health and utilization management.

How has your experience at Drake and in the PharmD program helped prepare you for this internship?

Not only has Drake prepared me from a clinical perspective to evaluate prior authorizations and make decisions based on guidelines and pharmacy knowledge, but it has also prepared me to be a well-rounded healthcare professional. Throughout the PharmD program, we are given opportunities to practice our clinical techniques and hone our soft skills, which has allowed me to develop the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively as a valued member of our team.

What have you enjoyed most about the internship?

I essentially had the privilege of being in 2 programs, both through AMCP Foundation and Pfizer, as well as with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City. This allowed me to connect with so many amazing individuals and increased my exposure to the limitless career opportunities for pharmacists in both industry and managed care settings. 

What has been your biggest lesson from the internship?

This internship is definitely one of the most influential experiences that allowed me to grow as a student pharmacist. However, it required me to step outside my comfort zone and challenge myself to think critically and learn brand new skills in a non-traditional setting. The biggest lesson I learned from this internship is to continue to reach outside my comfort zone and encourage others to do the same.

Why did you decide to study pharmacy at Drake and pursue a pharmacy career?

I chose to pursue a pharmacy career because of the unique role pharmacists have on the healthcare team and the variety of settings and career paths available with a PharmD. Drake’s program is very hands-on and prepares students to practice at the top of their license with high-quality training and clinical expertise.

What is one piece of advice you have for individuals considering Drake's PharmD program?

Some advice I have for students considering Drake’s pharmacy program would be to take advantage of the mentorship opportunities with our talented faculty and staff here at Drake. They are extremely well-connected and involved in the pharmacy community and are able to guide you to achieve your goals.
