The fate of democracy. Quarrels over the meaning of the constitutions and rights. Partisan polarization. Representing societies in all their diversity. War and peace between and within countries. Coping with crises of nature and the economy. Protests. The power of voting. Preparing for a future of change and challenges.

These are just some of the ways in which politics matters for everyone and will matter even more in the years ahead. In political science we combine qualitative and quantitative methods to put things in perspective and see the big picture.

Our political science degrees provide students with the skills for rewarding careers in government (at the local, state, national and international levels), political campaigns, law, journalism, business, non-profit organizations, advocacy, and academia. Alumni can be found working in the governments of Des Moines and other cities, of Iowa and other states, at the White House, and around the globe.

At Drake you will be taught by full-time faculty in classes from the introductory to advanced levels. Members of the department have received college- and university-wide honors and recognition for teaching, mentoring, and scholarship. We strive to create a welcoming environment in which controversies can be discussed in ways that are inclusive, informed, and respectful.
