Information for New First Year and Transfer Students

New First Time Students, as well as transfer students who are taking a First Year Seminar (those with fewer than 30 transfer credits), will be placed by their First-Year Seminar in a first-year residence hall. All other transfer students will be placed in the upper class residence halls.

The information completed on the application will also be used in the pairing of roommates such as: day or night, clean or messy, study habits and smoker/non-smoker.

When do the halls open?

New First Year & Transfer Student Move-In: Wednesday, August 21, 2024*

*Students will need to sign up for a move in time slot, emails will be sent to the students drake.edu email on August 1st.

Winter Break All Halls Close: Saturday, December 14, 2024 at noon.

J-Term Housing: Only students who are enrolled in on-campus or partial on-campus J-Term courses, who have academic year residence hall assignments in a J-Term hall may return beginning Sunday, January 5, 2025 at 3:00pm. There are additional room and board charges for J-Term.

J-Term housing will end Saturday, January 25, 2025 at noon

Halls Open for Spring Semester: January 25, 2025 at noon.

Spring Break Closing (Carpenter, Crawford, and Stalnaker): Saturday, March 15, 2025 at noon.

How to Request a Roommate

Please log into myDrake, click on the fork&knife icon, (Housing & Meal Plan Selection portal) in campus resources, click on "Apply Here" to get back into your completed "Residence Hall 2024-2025" Housing & Meal Plan Application/Contract, once in your application you will see on the left hand side, "Roommate Selection", you will click on this and follow the directions on this page to begin the process of request. Please know that all students must have the "Residence Hall 2024-2025" application/contract completed in order to see and request each other as roommates.

Room Assignments

Nearly all of the first year students on campus live in double rooms, as well as a few triple rooms. New upper class students live predominately in double and four person rooms, as well as a few triple rooms. There are more than 40 three-person rooms on campus. New First time & Transfer students, who have completed and submitted a housing and dining contract online, are assigned to available spaces in the order in which the contract and $250 housing deposit were received.  Most first-year students receive another first-year student as a roommate, but this is not guaranteed. 

Assignments will be available online beginning July 26, 2024 for students requesting housing for the Fall Term who complete and submit their online contract and deposit before June 30, 2024.

To access your room assignment, follow these steps (after the dates designated above):

1. Log into my.drake.edu
2. Click on the Self Service icon in the "Commonly Used Apps"
3. Click on the "Housing Roommates" in the Student Record card
4. Select term

Assignments will be available online beginning TBA for students requesting housing for the Spring Term who complete and submit their online contract and deposit before December 4, 2024.

Meal Plan Changes: Students will receive an email to their drake.edu email with the directions on when and how to make changes to their meal plan. Students can change their meal plan selection online, the month that classes will begin, (Fall/August, Spring/January) through the first Thursday of classes for each term within the academic year. After this date has passed the meal plan cannot be changed. **

Linens

All halls on campus (First Year and Upper-class) have extra-long beds. Residents supply their own sheets, blankets, bedspreads, and pillows. Linen packages may be purchased through the Residence Hall Association. Information on this service will be mailed to your home address.

Smoking

The Drake University campus is a smoke-free environment as per an Iowa State Law enacted July of 2008. Hookah pipes are not allowed in the residence halls even to be stored. Should a resident be found responsible for smoking in their residence hall room, that resident will be assessed a cleaning fee of $250 at the time of the incident.

Lofts

Residence hall rooms contain wooden beds that can be bunked/lofted or used as twin beds. Only university beds are permitted in the residence halls. Beds cannot be bunked in First Year Experience residence halls.

Storage

There is no storage available on campus. Any residents needing storage will need to seek a location off campus. Information for facilities can be obtained at the hall front desk through the yellow pages.

Candles & Incense

Burning of candles, incense and similar materials is a fire hazard and is prohibited in residence hall rooms and on exterior window sills. The aroma of incense and scented candles may affect another student's health.

Pets

All pets, except fish, are prohibited, as they can create safety and sanitation hazards in the residence halls. Animals "just visiting" are also not permitted in the residence halls. Fish are the only acceptable pets permitted and may be kept in tanks no larger than 10 gallons. Telephone

Drake University does not offer landline phone lines in the residence hall rooms. It is encouraged that students obtain some form of mobile/cell phone option as a mode of communication.

How to request a roommate

How to request a roommate, please log back into the Housing & Meal Plan Selection Portal, on the left-hand side you will see “Roommate Selection”, you will click on this to follow the directions on this page to begin the process of roommate selection. Know that all roommates must have a completed "Residence Life 2024-2025" application in order to see them and request them as a roommate.
All roommate requests must be completed by June 30th.

Room Changes

The Area Coordinator or Assistant Residence Hall Coordinator must approve all room changes and the room change forms must be completed before a student may move into a new room. Should an unauthorized room change occur, the student will be assessed an improper room change fee of $100.00.

Two Year Requirement

Full-time students must live in a Drake residence hall during any period of University enrollment within two years following high school graduation.  Exceptions include individuals who are married or live within a 45-mile radius of Drake University with their parent(s)/legal guardian and have completed the Commuter Application, and received, written approval from the Office of Residence Life to live off campus as a commuter student.

Drake West Village

The complexes are located adjacent to Drake's campus on 30thstreet and are for Juniors, Seniors, Pharm. D, Law and graduate students.

There is a two year live on requirement: Full-time students must live in a Drake University residence hall for the first two-years out of high school. The Drake West Village property is not owned nor operated by Drake University. Drake West Village is not a residence hall.
