Des Moines filmmaker working on Drake project
Maribeth Romslo, a Des Moines-born filmmaker, has created a video that is part of the mural installed at the new Drake Boys & Girls Club. The Des Moines Register recently covered the creation of the mural by New York artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya on the side of the building. The Gregory & Suzie Glazer Burt Club, which will open in August, is only the third Boys & Girls club in the nation to exist on a private college campus.
Romslo was responsible for bringing journalism students from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, to Drake SJMC in February. The students traveled to Des Moines to participate in the 50th anniversary of the Tinker v. Des Moines student free speech case. Romslo was working on a documentary about student speech.
Networking opportunity for interns in Des Moines
College students who are living and working in Des Moines this summer are encouraged to participate in the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s Seize the City initiative. Seize the City connects young professionals with cultural and entertainment events, and professional development and networking opportunities. For more information and to sign up for events, see https://www.dsmpartnership.com/working-here/find-an-internship/seize-the-city
Tour guides sought for Bulldog Days of Summer
Each summer, the Office of Admission hires students to serve as tour guides during the Bulldog Days of Summer Programs on July 22, July 29, Aug. 5, and Aug. 9. Students are paid $7.25 per hour. These programs will welcome 80–100 students and families to each program. To serve these visitors well, Drake students are hired to provide campus tours during defined hours each morning on these dates. A two-hour training session prior to giving a tour is required unless the student is already a Coleition member. Students sign up for available hours, and given the tour needs, are provided with a final schedule a week prior to the program. Students learn tour routes, key messages, responses to commonly asked questions, facts, and benefits of the University. Interested students should possess an enthusiasm for their Drake experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to relate to individuals from various backgrounds, ages, and experiences. Apply via Handshake by July 5.
