SJMC alum places in top 10 at USATF championships

Former Drake runner Reed Fischer , JO’17, (photographed at the finish line, above, with his Bulldog tattoo!) placed eighth in the 10,000 meter run this weekend in the USA Track and Field Championships, held at Drake Stadium. SJMC hosting science reporting “boot camp”

The SJMC is hosting a “boot camp” for political reporters on how to cover science issues in the presidential campaign. Thirty-two journalists from around the country will be on campus Aug. 4-7 learning from experts about polling, energy, climate, water quality, immigration and trade. The workshop is being organized by SciLine, a nonprofit resource for journalists based at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C.

SJMC and SciLine will co-host a free, public discussion on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 6-9 p.m. in the Science Center of Iowa’s planetarium, 401 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, Des Moines. “Climate Change: Rising to the Challenge” will feature Iowa State Climatologist Justin Glisan and the state climatologists of Nebraska and North Carolina, moderated by PBS science correspondent Miles O’Brien. University Communications and Marketing hiring fall interns

The Drake office of communications and marketing has openings for fall interns in the areas of communication, marketing, graphic design and website management. The positions pay $10/hour and are open to sophomores and above. Hours, schedules and start dates are flexible. See the University’s Handshake employment portal for more information and to apply.

How Snider spent his summer vacation

Multimedia professor Chris Snider was featured in a recent story in The Des Moines RegisterSnider’s softball team won a $5,000 sponsorship from Anheuser-Busch that included Busch Light-themed uniforms and free beer. The team also won a $10,000 reward for winning its league championship and will be featured on a local billboard. Team Stew won the Busch contest because of a Snider-produced video starring a fictional character, Stew, who is inspired by Busch Light to become a better player.

Apply for a post-graduate Fulbright scholarship

Seniors who are interested in pursuing a post-graduate international Fulbright fellowship: It’s not too early to be working on your application, which will be due the end of September. If you are interested in learning more about the Fulbright program, contact professor Eleanor Zeff at eleanor.zeff@drake.edu. Drake has historically been one of the top producers of Fulbright scholars in the nation. Six Drake students, including SJMC senior Ashley Blazek, were named Fulbright scholars in spring 2019.

Volunteer opportunities available for eating disorders walk

The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) Des Moines Walk is on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at Gray’s Lake – Christine Hensley Terrace (2101 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, IA 50315).

The Des Moines Walk will be a morning of raising awareness and funds for eating disorder programs, education outreach, and the support of individuals and families. Walkers and teams are needed to raise funds, and volunteers are also needed the day of the Walk. To register as either a Walker or Walker/Volunteer see https://nedawalk.org/register.

Meredith Hall is unlocked during the following hours during the summer:

Sunday and Saturday: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Monday-Thursday: 7 a.m.-9 p.m.
Friday: 7 a.m.-10 p.m.
