International Education Minor

Program Overview

The International Education minor is designed for any Drake student who does not plan to be a teacher but is interested in education in international contexts. Rooted in the core courses of the teacher education program that leads to teaching licensure, this minor provides recognition of the learning experiences and skill development of students who enrich their education internationally and interculturally, particularly through study abroad or travel seminar programs.

The International Education minor allows you to utilize international experiences and learning to enhance your understanding of education comparatively. The minor provides non-teacher education students an opportunity like the Educational Studies minor, but with an emphasis on international and intercultural education. Study abroad, travel seminar, and other international/intercultural courses and experiences can be used to fulfill the minor’s requirements.

Looking for a minor outside of your major?

Many colleges and schools at Drake require students to supplement their major with a concentration or electives offered through other academic units. The International Education minor offers you the opportunity to complete those requirements with courses in education that will provide valuable knowledge and take advantage of your international and intercultural experiences. Additionally, there are qualifying courses that can be used for all AOIs except for Quantitative Literacy and Written Communication, so you can get a minor and cover as many as six AOIs at the same time.

Are you unsure about your career path after graduation?

You may find the International Education minor useful as many of the courses offered provide the foundation for a teaching license. It can also form the foundation for teaching English abroad, obtaining TOEFL certification, and even prepare you for Drake University’s Teach in China/Kosovo and Working Worldwide programs. You could apply courses taken through this minor to an MAT/MST degree should you decide to pursue a graduate degree in teaching, especially with the intention to teach abroad in an international school.
