Minor in Latin American Studies

The Minor in Latin American Studies is a multidisciplinary program, intended for undergraduate students of upper-level Spanish. It is also intended for heritage speakers of Spanish who wish to gain greater understanding of their identity as well as for those who simply wish to acquire more knowledge about Latin America.

Requirements for the Minor

The Minor in Latin American Studies requires 21 hours of coursework, 12 hours of which must be taken at Drake. No more than 9 hours may be completed in any single discipline. The courses listed below will count toward the minor; the student’s advisor may approve other appropriate courses.

Students must take:

  • At least two Spanish courses at Drake above the SPAN 140 level (fifth semester) or two Portuguese courses at another institution above the fifth semester (at least 6 hours);
  • Courses taught in English related to Latin America in the fields of art, economics, English, history, marketing, music, philosophy/religion, political science, study of culture and society, world languages and cultures (up to 15 hours, courses in other areas may be approved by a WLC advisor).

Total = 21 hours (at least 12 must be completed at Drake)

Study abroad in Latin America is strongly advised. The study abroad program in Latin America must be approved by both Drake and the student's advisor (a tenured or tenure-track Spanish professor or the chair of WLC in consultation with the student’s primary advisor). Up to six credit hours from the study abroad experience may be applied toward the minor.
