Professor of Economics
Professor Boal holds a B.A. in Mathematics-Economics from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University. He has taught at Stanford, Ohio State University, Iowa State University, and, since 1995 in the Zimpleman College of Business atDrake University. In recent years he has taught undergraduate courses in microeconomic theory, regulation and antitrust, labor economics, econometrics, as well as a senior seminar. His non-academic experience includes two years at Pacific Bell Corporation and two years at the World Bank.
Professor Boal’s research area is labor economics. He has written numerous papers on the history of coal mining, published in such journals as Explorations in Economic History, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Industrial Relations, and Labor History (see wmboal.com/research).
A native of the East Coast, Professor Boal has lived in New York, New England, Washington DC, California, and Ohio, but is now a longtime resident of Des Moines. In his spare time, he sings with the Drake University Community Chorus and studies Chinese.
