Drake West Village is a contemporary interpretation of the surrounding residential neighborhood that complements the adjacent campus and Greek Row housing with its scale and building materials. The concept for the project was to develop a “village” atmosphere where students are part of a lifestyle community where they can live, work, study, and socialize within this unique environment. The semi-private courtyard formed by the two five story buildings provides a natural park-like environment and semi-private space for the residents to gather and enjoy in safety, off-street activities. Streetscape improvements enhance this pedestrian corridor and create a safe pedestrian link from the campus to the residences. Dividing the facades of the buildings into smaller volumes, both vertically and horizontally, along with the use of various building materials gives the building a more residential scale. Another element that was implemented to give residential scale to these large multi-story buildings is the use of residential sized windows in each of the sleeping rooms and larger windows in the living areas. These are less “institutional” and allow a homier atmosphere. The building materials themselves also help to achieve the residential appearance of the development. Brick veneer and a lap-board look siding are the vernacular building materials for most homes and are incorporated well into these buildings. However, to define the retail spaces at the street level, pre-cast concrete and cast stone architectural elements are effectively used to give a more substantial “base” and a collegiate look to the buildings. The building materials were chosen primarily for their durability and economical cost effectiveness; however their ability to convey the desired appearance for the project is their most desirable aspect.
