First-Generation Students
You Belong Here
For first-generation students, it can feel like you’re venturing down a seemingly uncharted path full of new experiences, locations, and expectations. It’s a lot to take in at first—and can seem a little daunting—but you’ll soon realize that, as a Bulldog, there’s a whole campus invested in your success, with peers, faculty, mentors, and advisors pointing the way forward and steering you toward all possible opportunities.
As your journey begins, you’ll find your home among a vibrant community of fellow first-generation students, each enriching Drake University with their unique talents. Get a glimpse of all that awaits and how we support you from the time you apply through graduation.
What Is a First-Generation College Student?
The term “first generation” isn’t always used the same way. So here’s how we use it at Drake. You’re considered a first-generation college student if your parents or legal guardians have not received a bachelor’s degree from a four-year university.
Our First-Generation Community
Drake is no stranger to first-generation students. From faculty and staff to about a quarter of current Bulldogs, you’ll find a broad community of fellow trailblazers.
