I’m excited that you’re considering a Kinesiology major at Drake University!
What I personally love about kinesiology is its multidimensional nature, weaving together elements from biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology. The main goal of kinesiology is to understand human movement, and then to apply that knowledge to medicine, exercise, and sports, ultimately helping to improve individual lives and society.
Since the major started in 2015, the most popular path chosen by Drake kinesiology graduates is physical therapy school. Others have continued their education in medical school, physician’s assistant school, nursing school, athletic training programs, or graduate school programs in specialized areas. Still other kinesiology graduates have entered the workforce directly as strength and conditioning or personal trainers.
Along the way we’ve welcomed two new faculty members, celebrated the opening of kinesiology-specific teaching and research spaces on third floor of the newer Science Connector Building, and most recently launched a 3+2 pathway between Drake kinesiology and Drake athletic training.
The multidimensional nature of kinesiology is reflected in our faculty because we come from diverse scientific and athletic backgrounds. Drake University students have opportunities to conduct original scientific research on novel questions side-by-side with faculty in the Kinesiology program, providing an additional layer of experience that helps make connections between the research and societal aspects of kinesiology.
