Preparing for finals
While the stress of big deadlines in each class can be daunting, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Finals week isn’t just about what students do during the last week of the semester; finals week is an opportunity for students to showcase what they have learned throughout the semester. You can support your students by reminding them of their accomplishments so far and talking with them about things they can do now to have a successful close to the semester. Here are some things to consider as you cheer them on:
- When students are struggling in classes, it can be hard to tell the truth about how things are going on campus. Instead, they might be relying on a great final exam grade to salvage their grade. You can help relieve the pressure they might be feeling by creating an environment where they can talk honestly with you about their current situation. Consider asking questions like:
- What class takes the most of your time?
- What work do you need to catch up on?
- What are you most proud of this semester?
- Treating studying like any other commitment (going to class, meeting a friend for lunch, an appointment, etc.) can help ensure students have enough time to prepare. Students can use this time to make and review flashcards, connect with study groups, review practice exams, and more. Instead of just focusing on what they know, students can try to figure out what they don’t know before the exam. Try asking your student how or where they’ve been studying instead of asking what they have been studying.
- Help your student find positive ways to deal with tension and stress. The Bell Center offers students a great workout facility and group exercise classes. Tutors can help answer questions and provide students with feedback. In addition to counseling, Drake offers UWill to support student mental health.
- Now would be a good time to send your students some encouragement, be it a quick text or a care package. A little encouragement can go a long way!
- No matter how the semester ends, you can remind your student that their grades don’t define them or their success.
