Supporting Your College Student Through Their First Round of Exams

As your college student navigates their first round of exams, it’s natural for them to experience heightened stress. They’re not only grappling with new material but also adapting to different instructors and their unique expectations. During this time, it’s crucial for students to maintain a positive outlook.

Encourage your student to shift their focus from what they don’t know to what they do know. A little pre-test pep talk can go a long way. Remind them to celebrate their progress and achievements. For instance, if your student has consistently attended every class, they should recognize the value of their commitment and the knowledge they've gained simply by being present.

As parents and family members, your role in helping your student stay positive is invaluable. Offer reassurance and remind them of their strengths and the effort they’ve put in. This support can make a significant difference in their confidence and performance.

If things don’t go as planned, remember that the Access & Success team at Drake University is here to help. We offer free academic coaching to assist students with reading strategies, note-taking techniques, and time management. Our goal is to support your student in overcoming challenges and achieving their academic goals.

Access & Success also supports students with disabilities through the accommodation process. We’ve been working diligently to ensure students have accommodations on file, but if your student has a documented disability and hasn’t yet met with our team, please encourage them to schedule a meeting as soon as possible.

By focusing on their progress and utilizing available resources, your student can navigate this stressful period with greater confidence and resilience.
