At the Drake University School of Education, we prepare world-class teachers and educational leaders.  With more than 900 undergraduate and graduate students, we are one of the largest schools of education in the Midwest.  We have an exceptional record of preparing highly effective elementary and secondary teachers, school counselors, principals,  and superintendents.  Additionally, we create specialists working in training and organizational development in the corporate and nonprofit sectors, we prepare mental health and rehabilitation counselors, and offer various strands for completing a terminal degree. At the same time, we don’t let our size compromise our commitment to providing an intimate learning environment that fosters close connections between students and faculty.

Why Drake? Why Now?

  • Full-time professors guide program development and advise students
  • Our reputation is worth the investment
  • We strive for continuous improvement, constantly reviewing and revising our courses

Program Options

Undergraduate level degrees are available for both elementary and secondary education. The SOE offers a strong professional program with a solid foundation in the arts and sciences, providing knowledge and perspective for disciplines taught in schools. Within their educational program, education students master a variety of methods of classroom instruction and assessment in courses that can lead to teacher certification in any state. Drake students are also empowered to apply their learning through classroom experiences in some of Iowa's top schools in all four years of the program.

Graduate level degrees include masters, specialist, and doctoral in the areas of teacher effectiveness, educational leadership, leadership development, and counseling. All classes are offered in an evening or weekend delivery format during the academic year and summer term. In most instances, the graduate programs can be completed in two years. A variety of courses are also offered in an online or in video correspondence format.

Our online graduate degrees include a Master of Science in Education - Effective Teaching program designed for current teachers who wish to remain in the classroom, learn new techniques to enhance their effectiveness as educators, and rise to the level of master teacher. In addition to core courses, the program allows teachers to gain additional expertise through an area of specialization or by completing the courses required for an endorsement. This program will help you discover new methods of teaching and become a leader among teachers.

All certification and endorsement programs in the School of Education are approved and accredited by the Iowa Department of Public Instruction, pursuant to Chapter 79, Code of Iowa.
