The Drake Refugee Clinic provides immigration legal services to noncitizens seeking immigration benefits and noncitizens facing removal, while giving students hands-on experience in immigration advocacy under faculty supervision.

About the Clinic

Student attorneys assist noncitizens from around the world and represent clients before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, immigration court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and federal appellate courts. Students may also engage in community lawyering projects or advocacy work and develop transferable skills such as litigation, counseling, case planning, working with interpreters, and culturally competent lawyering.

Practice Areas

The clinic may work on matters including family-based immigration, asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, benefits for victims of crime and domestic violence, naturalization, and removal defense, including consultation on immigration consequences of crimes in collaboration with the Criminal Defense Clinic.

Prerequisite/corequisite: Immigration Law (LAW 263).

VAWA and U visa matters (victims of domestic violence/crime)
Waivers (Forms I-601A, I-601, I-212)
Citizenship/naturalization (Form N-400)
SIJS, work permits (I-765), Temporary Protected Status (I-821)

The clinic may also assist with immigration court matters (including Omaha Immigration Court), such as removal defense, bond, appeals, motions to reopen/reconsider, cancellation of removal, asylum/withholding, and waivers.
