Resources
The Office of Sustainability supports and empowers students, staff, and faculty in making more sustainable choices through the practical resources, tools, and campus initiatives.
Sustainable Living
The Sustainable Living Guide provides information on how to incorporate sustainability into your everyday life. From information on recycling to the DART bus (which Drake students, staff, and faculty ride for free), this guide is your go-to!
This article has a TON of suggestions for reducing your footprint! You can take one suggestion, or many, and learn how to have an impact in sustainability.
Composting
There are two separate compost programs on our campus. Both of these programs divert waste from landfills.
The Event Compost Program allows faculty, staff, and students to request compost bins for their events. Any event that has food or paper products can use this program!
Use the guide below to request a compost bin for your event:

- For Faculty/Staff: Compost Guide for Faculty/Staff
Not sure what is compostable?
- The GreenRU Compostable Materials guide is a comprehensive list of materials that can be included in industrial composting programs.
- Or this condensed compostable materials graphic also shows items that can be included in our industrial composting program.
If you have any questions, email sustainability@drake.edu.
The Sprout Compost Program is a student‑run program in partnership with the Drake Environmental Action League that collects food waste from residence halls, Olmsted, the Johansen Student Center, and Fraternity/Sorority Life houses each week. This food waste is taken to the Sprout Garden, where it is composted each semester and used to enrich the garden’s soil.
What is compostable?
The Compost at Sprout Guide clearly shows what items are compostable with this program, which is different from the Compost at Events guide, as this is not an industrial compost program.
What can I compost from my dorm?
The Compost From Your Dorm information sheet is helpful for getting started.
