Student Engagement

One of the most important parts of our sustainability model is our student engagement. Drake students are able to get involved in sustainability in a variety of ways, such as through academic majors, minors and experiences, student organizations, and student-led projects. Here at the Office of Sustainability, we are continuously expanding our engagement with the campus community and working to get students involved with improving our sustainability. Check out our new Green Grad program!

Drake offers a variety of academic opportunities that align with our sustainability goals including:

  • B.A./B.S. Environmental Science
  • B.A. Environmental Sustainability and Resilience
  • Zoo and Conservation Science Concentration
  • B.A. Management and Organizational Leadership on the Organizational Sustainability and Resiliency Track

Many clubs & organizations are committed to social, economic, and environmental sustainability including:

  • Drake Environmental Action League (DEAL)
    • DEAL Instagram
    • DEAL Facebook
  • Drake Outdoor Leadership Club (DOLC)

Around Drake’s campus, students have been involved in a variety of projects that helped transform campus sustainability.

Students established a bike library on campus, allowing students to check out bicycles from Olmsted with their Drake ID. Drake students also created the Sprout Garden which is a community garden that provides fresh fruits and vegetables for people in the area. Examples of student leadership can be seen in many other programs too, such as the student-led Earth Week which is organized by DEAL each year and RHA positions that allow students to advocate for their peers in the residence halls.

Students at Drake have a variety of travel opportunities focused on environmental sustainability, including January-Term experiences in Rwanda, Uganda and the Galapagos Islands, and a close partnership with the School for Field Studies (SFS).
